Obeying The Grace of God: He Commands You To Have... →
jspark3000: Full post here. — If you’re repenting from sin, that’s all you’re doing: running from it. Suddenly you have a lot of idle free time and you’re not sure what to do. How about run back to that sin? Because that’s what most people do. They don’t know what else to do.  I suppose we could create a Christian subculture ghetto marginalized to the fringes of the mainstream, complete...

I used to think that I was the sum of my choices. I was wrong. I no longer define myself. Who God is and what He did now does. Anything less is to steal His glory. This truly is freedom.

I have no trouble with God’s sovereignty concerning predestination. But although I know this is true as well, I have the hardest time really believing that God is still sovereign when I mess up or sin. Let me be still and know that you are God.

The sovereignty of God does not preclude free will. In fact, what is amazing is that God’s sovereignty is so complete that He is sovereign even though we have free will. As such free will does not contradict God’s sovereignty; it only enhances it.

It’s so hard to encourage people who don’t know Christ. I feel like I’m lying all the time. You can do it, I tell them. You’ve got this. If you love it, you will be able to do it. If you work hard and put your mind to it, you’ve got this. Lies. All lies. Because, somewhere inside my head, I know what is true. You can’t. You can’t do this on your own....

Live dangerously.  I want to be ever-falling, ever unstable. I want to live in such a way that my only source of stability is God. I want to be walking in faith, trusting God to catch me. I want to be dependent on Him. I want to live such that if God ever didn’t come through, my life would be messed up. I want to live in a way that is inconceivable to others. I want to live in a way that is...

1 Book. 2 Plots. The Gospel of John.
kevinzimmerman: The Gospel of John is unique. Unlike the Synoptics, which almost exclusively focus on recording the historical story of Jesus of Nazareth, John takes a wider, more theological approach. Not neglecting the person of Jesus in history, John’s gaze is on the greater cosmological story of God’s work in the universe. It is within the person of Jesus Christ the reader of the Fourth...

Acts 9: a Church that multiplies
So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied. (Acts 9:31 ESV) Two things that are so critical to our Christian life: the fear of the Lord and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. It’s so easy to fall on one side or the other. I still struggle sometimes...

The Least Intimidating Battle of All Time →
Countless words have been written promoting or provoking atheism, most of them thoughtless. While many would declare it the “new religion” or a “final nail in the coffin,” it’s really just a washed up celebrity with a facelift. Followers of Christ have more or less responded in wild throes. Some are running scared from the whole thing, like it will eat up their children and gobble up their...

Acts 8 - the desert place, and following my call
Phillip meets the eunuch in a fairly strange way. An angel talks to him, saying: 26: “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.”  Cool, I think. If God tells me to do something, it must be important. Let’s do it. But there’s one short commentary. 26b: This is a desert place. I think I’m often scared of desert places. I...

It’s Impossible To Be Grateful Without Grief  →
jspark3000: I have never met a single person who handled continual blessing very well. They needed night before day, trials before triumph, death before life.   Adam was given paradise but broke his single command. Noah escaped judgment on the earth to become an alcoholic. Abraham idolized his only son. Isaac idolized only one of his sons. Jacob idolized himself. God blew up his hip. ...

An Ode to St. Valentine
Would you be my Valentine, whatever that may be? A martyred saint of many names, of Rome or of Terni? I’ll bury you this very day, on Flaminius’s road We’ll cry our tears and carry on, there’s peace when we are done Or would you be my Valentine, to heal me of my ill Unbind my eyes to see the light, and see the God above? Would I take you to the block, an axe to see you off...

Thing is, I don’t think marriage is a fundamental right of humans. It’s even less so than existence. Marriage is an option, a gift, an opportunity given by God. So God makes the rules. God decides. What He gives He can take away or limit. His world. His choice.

Dialogue: Simeon the Calvinist & Wesley the...
Simeon: Sir, I understand that you are called an Arminian; and I have been sometimes called a Calvinist; and therefore I suppose we are to draw daggers. But before I consent to begin the combat, with your permission I will ask you a few questions. Pray, Sir, do you feel yourself a depraved creature, so depraved that you would never have thought of turning to God, if God had not first put it into your heart?
Wesley: Yes, I do indeed.
Simeon: And do you utterly despair of recommending yourself to God by anything you can do; and look for salvation solely through the blood and righteousness of Christ?
Wesley: Yes, solely through Christ.
Simeon: But, Sir, supposing you were at first saved by Christ, are you not somehow or other to save yourself afterwards by your own works?
Wesley: No, I must be saved by Christ from first to last.
Simeon: Allowing, then, that you were first turned by the grace of God, are you not in some way or other to keep yourself by your own power?
Wesley: No.
Simeon: What then, are you to be upheld every hour and every moment by God, as much as an infant in its mother’s arms?
Wesley: Yes, altogether.
Simeon: And is all your hope in the grace and mercy of God to preserve you unto His heavenly kingdom?
Wesley: Yes, I have no hope but in Him.
Simeon: Then, Sir, with your leave I will put up my dagger again; for this is all my Calvinism; this is my election my justification by faith, my final perseverance: it is in substance all that I hold, and as I hold it; and therefore, if you please, instead of searching out terms and phrases to be a ground of contention between us, we will cordially unite in those things where in we agree.
